Body Count, Fantastic Negrito, Thundercat, Brittany Howard, Nas, Megan Thee Stallion, Ledisi & More Take Home Grammys

The 63rd Grammy Awards took place at the Los Angeles Convention center with Trevor Noah as the host. There were performances from Bruno Mars with anderson.paak, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B. Beyonce made history and became the woman with the most Grammys after taking her home her 28th one.  She joined Megan The Stallion onstage for their joint win for Best Rap Song for “Savage” which Jay-Z also won his 23rd Grammy for because he helped write the song. Their daughter Blue Ivy became the second-youngest winner ever at 9-years old for Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl.” Megan Thee Stallion became the first woman to win Best Rap Song. Ice-T’s Body Count took the award for Best Metal Performance. Nas won his first Grammy after 14 nominations over his almost 30-year career. Fantastic Negrito picked up his third Grammy for Contemporary Blues Album. Fans questioned why Taylor Swift became the first woman to win album of the year three times and why Billie Eilish won Record Of The Year two years in a row. [youtube id=”vRFS0MYTC1I”] Beyoncé’s video for “Brown Skin Girl” seeks to undo years of conditioning that told women with darker skin that they had no value.She lets them know that their complexion is something to be celebrated instead of shunned by society. The song is from The Lion: The Gift soundtrack and was used in the companion film Black Is King. Lupita N’yongo, Kelly Rowland, Naomi Campbell and Blue Ivy Carter have appearances in the video. Saint Jhn, Wizkid and Blue Ivy are also on the song. 




Shanachie To Release First Afrobeats Compilation

Shanachie Records is getting ready to release the first Afrobeats compilation in the United States. The new style of Afro pop is a mashup of Jamaican dancehall, Soca, hip-hop and African rhythms. Drake’s “One Dance” is an example of the style and the song features Wizkid who is one of the genre’s stars. Afrobeats Hot Hits: The New Sound Of Urban Africa will feature music from Wande Coal, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Timaya, Yemi Alade, Tekno, Wizkid and more. The majority of the artists hail from Nigeria and Ghana but they are American and Caribbean artists represented as well.

Afrobeats Hot Hits is a balanced introduction the style that is spreading around the world. Tiwa Savage, who has sung background vocals for Mary J. Blige contributed “IIeke.” Anthony David, who expressed his love for the genre to this site,  recorded the remix of “I Don’t Mind” with American based Nigerian artist Mic and it is included on Afrobeats Hot Hits.
