[youtube id=”tECDgsQY1Z0″] Walter “Junie” Morrison’s “Super Spirit” is from the album Plush Funk which is Volume 3  in the George Clinton and the Family series. Morrison usually wrote for the group but “Super Spirit” is a solo effort that he wrote, sang, played all the instruments and co-produced with Clinton. “Super Spirit” is a carefree listen compared to the intense dancefloor funk he made with The Ohio Players and Parliament-Funkadelic. “Super Spirit”‘s buoyant funk floats like it was made to populate the high skies and to help earthbound people get there. Morrison’s creativity received a new light after Solange was introduced to the song and dedicated the song “Junie” to him from her A Seat At The Table album.

Walter “Junie” Morrison of the Ohio Players and Parliament-Funkadelic fame has died at the age of 62. Morrison’s daughter, former bandmate James “Diamond” Willams and Dam-Funk confirmed his passing. Morrison was a multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger and writer for The Ohio Players in the ’70’s. He is largely credited with writing and arranging  “Funky Worm.” In 1974 he left the Ohio Players and recorded three solo albums for Westbound: When We Do, Freeze and Suzi Supergroupie.

In the late ’70’s Morrison became the musical director for Parliament-Funkadelic. His influence is heavy on the One Nation Under A Groove, Motor Booty Affair and Gloryhallastoopid albums. He is the co-writer of “(Not Just) Knee Deep.”

Morrison worked with George Clinton on some of his solo albums in the ’80’s and he produced “I Care” for Soul II Soul. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 along with 14 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.Morrison was heard on Dam-Funk’s “Junie’s Transmission” from his 2015 Invite The Light. Last year he was introduced to another generation as the inspiration behind Solange’s “Junie” from her Grammy-winning Seat At The Table.
