With the help of a shirtless strummer and bongo bucket player, an impromptu stage moment for The Niceguys turns into a crowd pleasing acoustic freestyle in “Ever Upward,” Part 8 of the Houston foursome’s long-running video series, “Nice Shorts.” While the video begins with the freestyle, Yves Saint’s flow plays the back for much of this video, as road music to a montage of clips that reflect The Niceguys’ 2011 SXSW excursion, layered with performance footage, hyped fans, and Cristolph, Free, DJ Candlestick, and Yves hitting the Austin streets. With a string of SXSW performances to go along with their recent Houston Press cover feature, The Niceguys are building a strong campaign for their upcoming release, The James Kelley EP, dropping later this spring. The EP will be preceded by a handful of new videos still to come from The Show, the next of which will be for “Die Later.”

Rapper Yves Saint, producers Christolph and Free, and DJ Candlestick, the Houston-based foursome known as The Niceguys, are excited to drop “Somebody,” the Lee Lonn Walker featuring love-themed new single from their debut album, The Show – and just in time for Valentine’s Day. Following the triumphant and celebratory sounds of “Toast,” released with an accompanying video in early January, “Somebody” mellows things out, with a sound reminiscent of the mellow tones of old school soul, complete with understated percussion and reverb heavy instrumentation.
“Love is not a choice. So when you do love, love well,” says Yves, the Queens-born emcee who has spent the last number of years in Houston after meeting the rest of The Niceguys while in school together at the University of Houston. “I wrote the whole song, but the most poignant parts were the bars that I wrote for Lee Lonn to sing: ‘We won’t live if we don’t try/ And love is life, so we won’t die.'”
Fans can also look forward to a video for “Somebody,” to be released later this month.
