Netflix’s The Get Down Is Canceled

Netflix has canceled The Get Down after one season. Baz Luhrmann’s series about the beginnings of hip-hop and the political tension in the Bronx just released the second-half of season one last month. It was previously noted that The Get Down was one of Netflix’s most expensive shows with a total cost of $120 million for the first season. The high price was attributed to delays in the pre-production and production process. Luhrmann told fans of the show on Facebook that the cancellation was the result of his inability to work on The Get Down full time.

The series takes places in the Bronx during the emergence of hip-hop in the ’70’s and there is an up-close look at how drug culture and the music were intertwined. Gil Scott-Heron sang about his addiction to Angel Dust in 1978 and Nas raps about the destruction it caused in urban America over the original track. The Get Down II soundtrack will be released April 21st.
