Boots Riley Talks About Sorry To Bother You & More

Riley, who is also known as the founder of the Bay Area rap group The Coup, wanted to look at issues around capital and exploitation. Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson co-starred in the dark comedy distributed by Annapurna Pictures.

[youtube id=”JAxDgkVlve0″]Boots Riley’s Sorry To Bother You opened nationwide this weekend and it is already receiving positive reactions after only one day in theaters. “OYAHYTT” featuring Lakeith Stanfield is from the soundtrack to the movie about one Black man’s adventures as a telemarketer in Oakland, California. The rock-rap song is part of a tracklisting that is not to be confused with The Coup’s Sorry To Bother You album from 2012. The soundtrack has appearances from Janelle Monae, Killer Mike and more. Boots Riley explained the release on Twitter:

Riley, who is usually referred to as the founder of political rap group The Coup, explains how the movie is informed by dark comedy, magical realism and science fiction. The movie’s plot focuses on telemarketer Cassius Green played by Lakeith Stanfield who is based in Oakland and the sacrifices he makes to become successful. Tessa Thompson, Terry Crews, Omari Hardwick and Danny Glover have roles in the feature that hits theaters July 6th.

Riley wrote the screenplay starring Lakeith Stanfield as Cassius Green who learns to become a successful telemarketer by sounding like a white man on the phone. The movie’s cast is rounded out by Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Danny Glover, Omari Hardwick, Terry Crews and more. The film screened at Sundance this year and was one of the most-talked-about projects. Sorry To Bother You will enter the theaters July 6th.
