We Are Scorpio duo jessica CARE moore and Steffanie Christi’an share the video for “I’m From Detroit,” featuring rapper Sada Baby. Their hometown love track is from their self-titled debut, dropping this Friday. Moore, who is Detroit’s Poet Laureate, and singer Christi’an perform, have fun, and hang out with friends and family in the video, representing their city. The ladies named the group after their zodiac sign and claimed rock’s legacy of Black women innovators, including Rock Godmother Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Funk Rock Queen Betty Davis, and icon Tina Turner. They previously shared “Supa Dupa Star,” “Scorpio,” and a cover of Patti Smith’s “Rock & Roll N***a.” Talib Kweli co-produced the album and rapped on “Supa Dupa Star.” We Are Scorpio will be available everywhere on Friday. 

We Are Scorpio, which consists of Detroit Poet Laureate jessica CARE moore and singer Steffanie Christi’an has released the video for “Scorpio,” featuring fellow Black woman rocker Militia Vox. The single is from their forthcoming album, We Are Scorpio.  The women stormed the streets of southwest Detroit while singing about the resilience of their astrological sign. They smile and snarl at the camera as they stake out space on the street, and history. The album was born of their desire to reclaim rock and roll’s Black roots. Moore’s album with Christi’an is the next step in her mission as the founder of Black WOMEN Rock! which celebrates 20 years next month. Talib Kweli co-produced the We Are Scorpio album and is featured on “Supa Dupa Star.” The duo’s self-titled album drops on August 16th.  

Jessica Care Moore and Steffanie Christi’an have joined to become We Are Scorpio, a powerful Black woman rock duo. The poet, who was the first to win amateur night at The Apollo, and the singer most recently heard on Inner City’s last album, decided to revel in their astrological sun sign to make music together. “Supa Dupa Star” featuring Talib Kweli is the second single from their forthcoming album. They filmed the video in Puerto Rico and are seen having a good time as they tell the story of a rock star they knew before he became successful. Kweli’s verses recant the rocker’s lifestyle from his perspective and all the fun he’s had being in the spotlight, and he even gives a shout-out to A Band Called Death, who is from Detroit like Moore and Christi’an. The album comes out next year and is also the 20th anniversary of Moore’s Black Women Rock showcase.  “Supa Dupa Star” is fun but has an edge to let you know how serious they are about reclaiming the work of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Mama Thorton, Tina Turner, Betty Davis, Nona Hendryx, Poly Styrene, and Tina Marie Bell. The duo will join Talib Kweli on his West Coast tour next week; tickets are on sale now.

Jessica Care Moore’s Black Women Rock took to the stage at the Detroit Institute of Arts tonight and paid tribute to Betty Davis.Tamar Kali, Yahzarah, Steffanie Christian and Jessica Care Moore took turns with their own songs and material from Davis.
