2010 JazzReggae Festival At UCLA Presented By Scion

For yet another year, JazzReggae Festival’s lineup has packed quite the punch. With headliners Nas and Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, Raphael Saadiq, and Q-Tip, it’s easy to see why so many other sensational acts are delighted to take the stage this Memorial Weekend at UCLA’s Intramural Field for the 24th annual JazzReggae Festival as presented by Scion.

Grammy-winner Raphael Saadiq and esteemed artist Q-Tip will be the headlining acts for May 30th Jam Day. Q-Tip rose to fame with the legendary and influential hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, and has worked with artists Nas and Saadiq. Q-Tip mixes modern R&B and Hip-Hop with jazz infused sound to create music that is both revolutionary and familiar, and will perform at the festival with his critically acclaimed live band.
The full line up for Jam Day includes more Grammy nominated artists, including Janelle Monáe, whose highly anticipated album, The Arch Android, drops on May 18th from her own Wondaland Arts Society and P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Records. This album combined with past success has earned her the title of Queen of Cyber-Soul. Also performing is Bilal, the neo-soul and jazz singer who flawlessly combines jazz, R&B, big band and stunning vocals. Georgia Anne Muldrow & Declaime will bring a hypnotic electro-funk to the stage. Also performing on Jam Day are up-and-coming Denmark soul duo Quadron, Tha Boogie, Dr. Bobby Rodriguez and the UCLA LatinJazz Ensemble, and the Fernando Pullum Performing Arts High School Jazz All-Stars – talented young jazz players from LA’s inner city.

Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley will be headlining this year’s Reggae Day on May 31st as part of their Distant Relatives Tour promoting their album drop on May 18th, with part of the proceeds benefiting education in Africa. Also performing is Jamaican native Cham whose dancehall beats have successfully crossed over to rap and R&B popularity. Barrington Levy, one of dancehall’s most accomplished artists, will perform backed by Detour Posse. Also joining Reggae Day is the prestigious and politically influenced Etana, also backed by Detour Posse. Nigerian native Nneka as well as The Lions complete the lineup, making this year’s Reggae Day one of the most impressive yet.

Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster. For more information, please visit our website at www.jazzreggaefest.com and our Facebook at www.facebook.com/jazzreggaefest.

Vice, the international arts and culture magazine distributed and published in more than 22 countries, comes to Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery on July 25 for the ninth annual Vice Photo Show.

Best known for documenting youthful excess, questionable street fashion and powerful scenes of political unrest around the world, Vice presents this exhibition in conjunction with “The 2009 Vice Magazine Photo Issue” and is curated by the magazine’s managing editor Amy Kellner. The acclaimed annual edition has previously featured works from Terry Richardson, Ryan McGinley, Richard Kern, Jerry Hsu, Rennie Ellis and many others.

This year’s exhibition features Vice contributors Jamie Lee Curtis Taete, Maggie Lee, and former Vice photo editor, Tim Barber. Tim is also curating a mini group-show-within-a-group-show of photos featured on his online gallery, tinyvices.com.

His work has been featured in Vice, Chief, PerezHilton.com and The Guardian, and has been shown in Mexico, France, Britain, North America and Japan as part of the Tiny Vices traveling exhibition. Taete is a Vice UK staff photographer and maintains a photo blog at www.jamietaete.com.

Maggie Lee is a zine-maker, Pratt graduate and Vice staff photographer who has developed a chronological archive of her 21 years through captured light and photocopies. Lee has shown her work in New York, New Zealand and Australia and has recently exhibited her Frenching zine at the New Museum’s “Younger Than Jesus” show.

Tim Barber, a photographer, curator, publisher, designer and former Vice Magazine photo editor runs the online gallery TinyVices.com.
