Sarah Dash Memorial Service

Sarah Dash’s memorial service took place in New Jersey today. Dash, who was a member of LaBelle, died September 20th at the age of 76. LaBelle went worldwide in 1974 with their hit “Lady Marmalade.” They were the first Black women rock stars and set the blueprint for those after them. The group broke-up in 1976 and reunited in 2008 for the album Back To Now. Dash had success in 1978 with the disco tune “Sinner Man.” The service had wonderful performances from multiple performers including the tribute from Dash’s bandmates Patti LaBelle and Nona Hendryx.

“By radical healing, we’re acknowledging the power of music to lift our spirits and connect us across all our differences. We recognize that we can’t build and sustain strong movements for the long haul with broken people who bear the brunt of crises and violence. We need moments of shared joy and connections as much as information and strategy. Some of the most amazing music ever created has been birthed from struggle.”
