Throwback: Eazy-E- We Want Eazy

[youtube id=”Igxl7YtS1vQ”]Eazy-E’s “We Want Eazy” is from his debut solo album Eazy-Duz-It. The D.O.C. wrote “We Want Eazy” and Dr. Dre and DJ Yella co-produced the song that has a sample of “Ah…The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!” by Bootsy’s Rubber Band. The video’s storyline follows Eazy-E getting arrested one hour before a concert and his eventual breakout from the jail to join his N.W.A. bandmates onstage. Michel’le and Ice Cube appear in the audience and Bootsy Collins makes a rare appearance at the end. Eazy-E’s solo album was still an N.W.A. production because they all worked on it with The D.O.C. being the only member outside the group to make the personnel. Eazy-Duz-It was another definitive occasion in the growth of West Coast rap and it strengthened the legend of N.W.A. Dr. Dre and Yella’s use of funk samples created a pathway for G-Funk and The Chronic. The album did not receive much support from radio or television but by February 1989, five months after its release, it achieved Gold status. Eazy-E’s 1993 It’s On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa EP would be the last project he would release while alive. Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton came out in 1996, 10 months after he passed from A.I.D.S. Eazy-E’s contributions to the West Coast scene made him the godfather of gangsta rap as an artist and a businessman who co-founded Ruthless Records with Jerry Heller.

R.I.P. Jerry Heller

Jerry Heller, who once managed N.W.A. and was a co-founder of Eazy E’s Ruthless Records died in Los Angeles yesterday at the age of 75 after suffering a heart attack. Heller’s stature in the West Coast rap world was controversial because N.W.A. eventually questioned his business ethics and accused him of financial mismanagement. These allegations were mentioned in the movie Straight Outta Compton and Heller filed a lawsuit against N.W.A. and NBC Universal because he said the allegations were false and harmed his reputation. Whether he was a friend or foe to N.W.A. he was pivotal in the West Coast rap scene having worked with N.W.A., The D.O.C., Michel’le and The Egyptian Lover. In the ’60’s and ’70’s he worked on the tours of a plethora of rock and R&B acts including Elton John, Marvin Gaye and Pink Floyd among many others. Heller’s book, Ruthless: A Memoir was published in 2006 and he addressed many of the conflicts surrounding his time with N.W.A.
