Mary J. Blige Receives Oscar Nominations For Mudbound

Mary J. Blige has two Oscar nomination for Dee Ree’s Mudbound. She is being recognized for the Best Supporting Actress role and “Mighty River” is nominated for Best Original Song. Blige co-wrote “Mighty River” with Raphael Saadiq and she has become the first person to be nominated for a performance and song in the same year and film. Rachel Morrison is the first woman to be nominated for cinematography for her work on Mudbound. Dee Rees also has a first as a woman in the category for Adapted Screenplay with co-writer Virgil Williams.

Mudbound takes place in Mississippi during World War II and follows the lives of two veterans one Black and one white after they return home. Blige played Florence Jackson who is the matriarch of her family. Racism and PTSD are looked at and felt through the eyes of each man.

The movie gives Netflix an inaugural nomination for a film that is not a documentary.

Raphael Saadiq Earns Golden Globe Nomination for “Mighty River” from Mudbound

Raphael Saadiq received his first Golden Globe nomination this week for writing “Mighty River” for the Mudbound soundtrack. He was nominated alongside co-writers Mary J. Blige and frequent collaborator Taura Simpson. “Mighty River” has also been nominated for a Soul Train Award and a Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards.

Saadiq is the composer for HBO’s Insecure and he executive-produced music for the Sundance documentary, STEP. On nomination he said,

“The nomination really caught me off guard. I guess I like surprises after all. It’s great to share this with Taura & Mary J.”

Dee Rees is the director of Mudbound which is streaming now on Netflix.
