Event Location: East West Bank Plaza at The Broad, First Floor Galleries

It’s the summer of J Dilla in Los Angeles, and The Broad joins the festivities by honoring the revered artist who would have been 50 this year. On the heels of Dilla Jazz at The Ford, Dilla’s House at The Broad features artists who knew and worked with Dilla, who have been inspired by his pioneering methods, and who exemplify a spirit of cross-pollination that Dilla and other artists cultivated, including the dearly loved and recently departed Amp Fiddler. With a special focus on the uplifting and soulful side of house and dance music through the lens of Dilla’s legacy, the event will have guests dancing under the stars on the museum’s outdoor plaza.

An ensemble performance helmed by Detroit’s Moodymann will feature fellow Motor City icons Dames Brown on vocals, Dez Andrés on the ones and twos and percussion, and Mark de Clive-Lowe on keys and beat machines. The evening will warm up fast with LA’s ownDJ Ashley Younniä; local music maven DJ Rashida will keep the energy levels up to close out the night. The evening will be hosted by The Yancey Boys AKA Illa J + Frank Nitt and is co-curated by Mahogani Music and Fusicology.

Moodymann Will Play At Paisley Park

Detroit DJ and house music auteur Moodymann will play an extensive set of Prince’s music at Paisley Park December 1st. The longtime Prince fan will honor the late musician with a set of rare tracks, B-sides, and unreleased songs. Red Bull Music will present the event at Prince’s home in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Prince’s relationship with Detroit was unique because of the way the city embraced him before superstardom. The artist gave rare interviews to DJ The Electrifying Mojo and played limitless concert dates in the city during his rise in the ’80s. Moodymann has always been open about Prince’s influence on his music. The reclusive artist and label owner, who has recorded with Prince collaborator Amp Fiddler in the past, became one the most respected names in dance music during the ’90s. His unconventional approach and refusal to dilute his vision with trends produced some of the most sweat-inducing moments on wax. Moodymann’s “Shades Of Jae” became an anthem at Detroit’s Club Heaven under the fingers of late legendary DJ Ken Collier. His catalog was also received on an international level and Drake recently sampled his “Live At Cutloose 2nd Birthday Party” on “Passionfruit.”

Tickets for Moodymann’s set at Paisley Park can be purchased from Red Bull’s site.
