Throwback: Monica-Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)

Monica’s 1995 debut single “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)” set off her career as one of the youngest and most successful artists of the ’90s and 2000s. Her mature voice contradicted her youth and so many people were relating to a 14-year singing about a need for personal space in a relationship. Dallas Austin, who discovered her, co-wrote the song with Monica, Derrick Simmons and Willie James Baker. Production-wise, the song had elements of hip-hop soul because of the sampled beats from Public Enemy and LL Cool J. Monica was the youngest person with two number one R&B songs because “Dont’ Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)”‘s chart ascendance was duplicated with “Before You Walk Out Of My Life.” Monica’s authenticity was held up by the black and white video because looked as grown-up as she sounded.  She also revealed in an interview how she demanded songs that could truly resonate with her on an emotional level.  Miss Thang was a stellar beginning for Monica as it matched her abilities with the right songs and four of them became hits. The album is widely accepted as a must-have for the era. All of her accomplishments were led by the succees of  “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days.)”

Monica has eight studio albums and Code Red from 2015 is her most recent one. In 2020, she participated in Verzuz with Brandy. Her single “Trenches” featuring Lil Baby came out around the same time as her Verzuz appearance.
