Q-Tip Will Become Miles Davis In Reading Of Nelson George’s Screenplay

Q-Tip is scheduled to give a single sold-out reading of Nelson George’s Miles Davis screenplay My Funny Valentine at Joe’s Pub in New York City. The legendary rapper previously spoke with XXL about reading the script for the first time in front of Davis’s family and friends seven years ago.  According to the theater’s description, the plot takes place in the ’80s and events unfold after Davis answers a fan letter. My Funny Valentine takes place Monday (March 26th). 




Miles & Betty Davis Unreleased Demo Session Released For The First Time

[youtube id=”XXAdZiTemq4″] Betty Davis’s brief marriage to Miles Davis led him towards the embracing of new sounds in the ’60’s. The former Betty Mabry introduced Davis to the music of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone which was the precursor to his explorations in fusion with Bitches Brew. Before she recorded her groundbreaking funk solo albums and he started crafting his new sound, they recorded some demos for Columbia. Mitch Mitchell, who was the drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience and saxophonist Wayne Shorter are some of the people who played on the session. The recording has now been released as Betty Davis The Columbia Years: 1968-1969 and it has been remastered and has  rare photos and interviews.




Miles Davis & Robert Glasper-Maisha (So Long) Extended Version Featuring Erykah Badu Official Video

[youtube id=”9G5bNoL4CbU”] Robert Glasper and Erykah Badu are temperamental artists balancing their romance and artistic lives in the video for “Maiysha (So Long) Extended Version.”  Glasper’s Everything’s Beautiful is an album of Miles Davis covers redone with Glasper’s contemporary arrangements. “Maiysha” is from Davis’s 1974 Get Up With It which was further into his electric direction and interest in fusion. Glasper and Badu entertain while the ghost of Davis guides Badu’s notes.




Miles Davis Talks About Prince

[youtube id=”1BxRYIoKMJU”] Today would’ve been Prince’s 58th birthday but celebrations of his  birthday have been combined with the mourning of his passing on April 21st. Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton made today Prince Day in the artist’s home state. Spike Lee hosted a birthday party with Sway in Brooklyn this past weekend and Tidal has uploaded 15 albums of Prince’s including some unreleased music. BET has announced some of the performers for the Prince tribute which so far includes Sheila E, The Roots, D’Angelo, Janelle Monae and more to come. In the video clip above, Prince’s fellow Gemini, the late Miles Davis, talks about Prince being influenced by Jimi Hendrix, James Brown & Charlie Chaplin. Prince and Davis even shared the stage and you can see it here.
