Rhythm Roulette: Jazzy Jeff

[youtube id=”tzNTC7q4lhE”] DJ Jazzy Jeff does Rhythm Roulette for Mass Appeal and makes new sounds from three records delivered by his mobile music dealer Gene Brown. Jeff displays his genius with a level of excitement usually reserved for new producers. The final creation is an amazing production with the addition of Dayne Jordan rapping on the track.

Rhythm Roulette: Mr. Porter

[youtube id=”74UyrLOa0BE”] Mr. Porter makes a beat for Mass Appeal’s Rhythm Roulette and instead of the usual three blind picks he only chooses one record because it was all he could afford growing up in Detroit. He chose disco group Silver Convention’s Golden Girls album from Amoeba Music in Los Angeles and made three beats from one song. Porter is accustomed to working fast because he told the audience how he, Proof and J.Dilla would have 10-minute beat-making contests.

Rhythm Roulette: The Tuxedo Version

[youtube id=”qOEh9nmIbGQ”] Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One visit Good Records in NYC for their Rhythm Roulette session. Hawthorne was lucky in his picks because all three records were from the era that Tuxedo is most inspired by. MFSB’s “Love Is The Message,” the soundtrack to an ’80’s film called Blue Thunder and Logg’s “I Know You Will” were the perfect pieces to go with the guitar from Hawthorne, communal handclaps and synthesizers. The final production only needed vocals, lyrics and another one of their cool videos to finish the deal. Tuxedo’s second album Tuxedo II is out now and they will start their tour in Europe this week and come back to the United States in May.
