Main Source was composed of Queens native Large Professor and Toronto DJs K-Cut and Sir Scratch. The group was founded in 1989 and the efficacious Breaking Atoms surfaced in 1991. Large Professor had already produced music for Eric B & Rakim and Kool G Rap but Breaking Atoms revealed his talents as an emcee. “Looking At The Front Door” and “Just Hangin’ Out” managed chart success but the album’s significance was much more than its commercial presence. Nas and Akinyele made their recording debut on “Live At The Barbeque” and the production style of the album set a standard. The group broke-up before their second album, The Sciencecould be released but K-Cut and Sir Scratch enlisted Mikey D for Main Source’s second and last album Fuck What You Think. The album received little attention but it is worth mentioning that Jadakiss and D-Block appear on the song “Set It Off” before their Lox days. Large Professor went on to produce a variety of hip-hop artists including Busta Rhymes and A Tribe Called Quest among many others. He most recently produced “Ohh” for Joell Ortiz. In 1996 he released two singles “Ijuswannachill” and “The Mad Scientist” on Geffen Records. The expected full-length project, The LP, never made it to the market but he did release the album 1st Class on Matador Records in 2002. K-Cut has produced music for Big Pun and Queen Latifah in between running his own label.
