Throwback: Family Circle-Mariya

Newark, New Jersey natives Mary, Charles, Don, David and James Simmons were The Family Circle. “Mariya” is from their 1973 release, Love Bound. Their independently distributed albums were under-appreciated but soul collectors and hip-hop gave their music a pulse beyond the ’70’s. “Mariya” has been sampled by various hip-hop artists including Cappadonna, The Game and J.Cole. Lead singer Charles Simmons, lead an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign in 2013 to digitize their 3 albums.
