Throwback: Santana-Smooth Feat. Rob Thomas

Carlos Santana’s “Smooth” featuring Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas was from his band’s 18th studio album Supernatural which reintroduced his music to the world of pop and gave him a mighty comeback. Itaal Shur and Rob Thomas co-wrote “Smooth” which was originally Shur’s creation called “Room 17” until Thomas changed the lyrics. The song took off and gave Santana his first number one hit and was one of the factors in the huge success of the album. “Smooth” topped the charts internationally and a whole new audience became aware of Santana who started his career in the late ’60s. He was mostly known for his version of “Black Magic Woman” which was released in 1970 but “Smooth” became his new signature song. Billboard recognized the song as the number one rock song in the history of the Hot 100 Singles chart.

was released in 2021.

Watch: Seun Kuti Meet Carlos Santana

[youtube id=”EX5c-fneNUw”] Seun Kuti’s Black Times album is coming out March 2nd. Carlos Santana appears on the album and in this video they meet and talk about people claiming the inner divine. Santana plays guitar on the lead track “Black Times” and Kuti says,

“The track talks about that first moment of clarity for a Motherland person, that moment of understanding about who you are and your position in the system running the world today.”

Santana shared the stage with Kuti’s father Fela in 1986 on the Amnesty International Conspiracy Of Hope tour. The musicians developed a mutual respect for each other and Santana has been connected to Kuti’s family ever since that time.

Black Times is Seun Kuti’s fourth album and the music is socially-conscious with the intent to spark conversation.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 Releasing New Album Share Black Times Single Feat. Carlos Santana

[youtube id=”HRggdDV-dBc”] Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 are releasing their fourth album Black Times in March. The first single is the title track “Black Times” and Carlos Santana makes a guest appearance. Kuti is the youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and he inherited the Egypt 80 orchestra created by his father when he was 14. Black Times is politically-informed music in the same fiery spirit as that of his father. The album talks about worldwide corruption, legalizing marijuana and revolution. Kuti described the project in his own words:

“Black Times is a true reflection of my political and social beliefs. It is an album for anybody who believes in change and understands the duty we have to rise up and come together. The elites always try to divide the working class and the poor people of the world. The same oppression felt by workers in Flint, Michigan is felt by workers in Lagos and Johannesburg.”

Robert Glasper is one of the guest artists on Black Times and he appears on the freedom-fighter tribute “Last Revolutionary.” Black Times has a release date of March 2nd.
