Noname Announces U.S. Tour

Noname released her mixtape Telefone this past summer and it was a critical success that allowed her to tour as the opening act for Lauryn Hill. The Chicago poet collaborated wth Raury and Eryn Allen Kane among others on the project that was recognized by fans and the press. In January, she will embark on her first headlining tour which will make 21 stops around the country.

Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise Documentary Trailer

[youtube id=”OSe7rkK76x4″] And Still I Rise is a documentary about the late Dr. Maya Angelou. The late author, poet and civil rights activist passed two years ago and the film is a chronicle of her life and work. Common, Hilary Clinton, Cicely Tyson and Alfre Woodard are some of the people who appear in the film and talk about Angelou’s influence. Angelou’s own words are used to help narrate the film that will air on PBS in the Winter of 2017. And Still I Rise is currently playing at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago.




Afropunk After Dark Schedule Will Be Hosted By Saul Williams And Have Poetry From Nikki Giovanni

Afropunk’s annual festival is taking place in Brooklyn again this year and the festival is taking place August 27th and 28th. The After Dark series will begin Thursday (August 25th) evening and end on Monday, August 29th. Saturday night Nikki Giovanni will read poetry and Saul Williams is the host. The Gza will perform with DJ Premier  Saturday night at a secret location and Angelo Moore is the host. There will be a dance party, a Black party, a performance from Laura Mvula among the many events. On Friday, March 11, 2016, from 8 pm to 2 am at TV Lounge in Detroit, Michigan, Jus Friends presents the Detroit Techno All Stars in Support of Flint for a special event, “Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)”. In response to the Flint water crisis, the newly formed initiative has collaborated  with prominent Detroit promoter to raise awareness in the electronic music community while providing world-class entertainment from Detroit’s best and brightest ‘All Stars.’ A first of its kind fundraiser within Detroit’s Techno and House community, 100% of the proceeds will directly benefit Flint by providing financial resources for Flint residents and donations to the Child Health and Development Fund. The location offers 3 stages of music with a line-up of over 35 DJs and artists. Highlights of the event include appearances by DJ/Producer Moodyman, techno legend Kevin ‘KMS’ Saunderson as celebrity guest bartender, acclaimed group Detroit Techno Militia and poet Jessica Care Moore.
