Dance music diva Loleatta Holloway passed yesterday in her hometown of Chicago from heart failure. Holloway’s staunch vocals had shook dancefloors since the late ’70’s with “Love Sensation,” “Hit and Run” and “Catch Me On The Rebound” among a host of other club classics that gave her career a longevity that her earlier R&B releases did not. In the ’90’s her voice was in demand after Marky Mark sampled “Love Sensation” for his song “Good Vibrations.” The vocalist started singing professionally with her mother in the gospel group the Holloway Community Singers and had her solo debut in 1973 with Loleatta. Her voice was shamelessly sampled by many producers and the most famous incident with the group Black Box lead to her successfully suing them for not giving her credit. As an artist that was revered by the nighttime crowds she continued to perform into the later years of her career.
Don’t get it twisted; Donwill is still very much a part of Tanya Morgan, but since last year’s release of his album Don Cusack In High Fidelity, the Cincinnati-born, Brooklyn-based rapper has been taking out time to carve out his solo niche. One of the standout tracks from Don Cusack was “Love Junkie,†the ode to one-night stands, which featured Peter Hadar and Harlems Cash. After hearing the remix, which features Wallpaper and San Francisco’s premier rhythm section, The Park, founding member of the renowned DJ crew The Rub DJ Eleven recruited Donwill to officially release a full Love Junkie EP on his own 11 Inch Records.
“I’ve been a Tanya Morgan fan for a minute, so when I heard the remix Donwill did with Wallpaper, I was sold” says DJ Eleven. In addition to the Wallpaper remix of “Love Junkie,†the EP also includes “Look At Me,†an all new b-side produced by 1-O.A.K of The Honor Roll, and a So Shifty remix of “Love Junkie.â€
The “Love Junkie (So Shifty Remix)” is easily the most adventurous remix on the EP, with the Hamburg, Germany-based DJ and production duo providing a House-infused thumping, syncopated drum beat, along with a mix of fluttering and stabbing synth lines to accompany the chopped and often pitched and effects-laden vocals placed throughout the track.
Donwill and DJ Eleven’s Love Junkie EP is the sixth release from 11 Inch Records and is available now via all digital retailers.

Harvey Mason began his study of the drums at the age of 7 in his native Atlantic City, New Jersey. At 16 he had his first drum set and he would later attend the Berklee School of Music and graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music. By the late ’60’s he was performing with Erroll Garner and Duke Ellington. In the ’70’s he became a much sought-after studio musician and he also did a lot of film and television work. He made notable appearances on Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Donald Byrd’s Black Byrd and George Benson’s Breezin’. Clive Davis signed Mason to his Arista label in 1976. Five recordings came from this deal including 1979’s Groovin’ You of which the title track was sampled by house music producer Gusto in 1995 for “Disco’s Revenge.” Marching In The Street was his first solo release and the title track and “Modaji” are foundations of jazz fusion. Mason’s last recording as a soloist was 2004’s With All My Heart. Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Ray Charles are a handful of the artists he has performed with on a list that is too long to name. He has received multiple Grammy nominations and is a founding member of the smooth jazz group Fourplay. His son is Harvey Mason, Jr. who is one-half of the production team The Underdogs who have produced tracks for people like Fantasia, Mariah Carey and Beyonce. Father and son worked together on the soundtrack for the 2006 film adaptation of “Dreamgirls.”
