Rapsody follows up her Please Don’t Cry album from 2024 with God Gotta Afro & Gold Hoops. Last year, she dropped the collaborative EP with Madlib, MadRaps. Mr. Porter produced most of GGAAGH with Madlib, BLK ODYSSY, DJ Whoo Kid, Moonchild’s Amber Navran, and KARABO YA MORENA, with the South African Arrangers handling the rest, alongside choral arrangements.
Rapsody’s politics remain consistently pro-Black, pro-human, and unapologetically committed to frill-free hip-hop. She can be defensive in her position when scoping out the flashiness of the contemporary mainstream on “Pick A Side,” asking, “You hearin’ me different, should I pop a titty for niggas to get it.” Industry critique is not her only concern, however; “OMG! (Love To Sun Ra)” finds her riffing on an Afrofuturist cosmology that shouts out the late jazz visionary alongside funk king George Clinton, Jojo Abot, and Nomisupasta. There is also room for love on the D’Angelo-sampled “Apple Juice,” marking another instance of her vibing with the late soul singer following their 2019 collaboration, “Ibtihaj.”
Rapsody’s official statement regarding GGAAGH promised music reflective of divine Black self-love, and she kept that creed with a sharp, pen-wielding fist.
