Sparky D, one of the earliest battle rappers in hip-hop history, has passed away at the age of 61. Born Doreen C. Broadnax, she hailed from Brownsville, Brooklyn, and was originally a member of a crew called the Playgirls, who were known for performing their raps in alphabetical order.
Sparky D later met producer Spyder-D, who encouraged her to respond to Roxanne Shanté’s hit “Roxanne’s Revenge.” Her response track, “Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne, You’re Through),” achieved gold status within days, officially igniting the legendary “Roxanne Wars”—an era defined by numerous response records aimed at Shanté. The massive success of the record solidified Sparky D as the first rap star to come out of Brownsville.
Capitalizing on the immense popularity of their rivalry, Shanté and Sparky D teamed up in 1985 to release a collaborative battle record, “Round One: Roxanne Shanté vs. Sparky Dee.” Fortunately, their conflict stayed strictly “on wax,” and the two became close friends in real life.
Though her career was later derailed by struggles with domestic violence and drug addiction, Sparky D eventually became born again and found recovery. While she stepped away from making new music, she continued to make appearances at major hip-hop events. She recently shared her powerful life story in the 2024 documentary, You Can’t Erase Me.
