“Do You Love What You Feel” is on Rufus and Chaka Khan’s 1979 eighth studio album, Masterjam. David “Hawk” Wolinski, who was the keyboard player and a songwriter for the band, was solely responsible for writing the single. Masterjam was the group’s first time working with Quincy Jones, who produced the whole album. Jones smoothed out the band’s funk with his sophisticated arrangements that blended jazz, pop, disco, and R&B. Chaka Khan’s siblings Taka Boom and Mark Stevens were among the backup singers. It was their first album with MCA, and Khan had already released her debut solo album, but she was contracted to stay with the band. “Do You Love What You Feel” wound up being the last hit for the classic lineup before Khan went permanently solo. They did reunite for the live album Stomping At The Savoy in 1983.
Masterjam was a number one R&B album chart-wise and made the top 20 of the pop chart. “Do You Love What You Feel” is still known to fill the dance floor and start intense conversations with music geeks. In 2026, I’m Every Woman—The Chaka Khan Musical is playing in London. In May she will rejoin Stephanie Mills, Patti LaBelle, and Gladys Knight for their The Queens: 4 Legends, 1 Stage tour. Khan was the recipient of the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys and the Resonator Luminary Award. Chaka Khan and Eric Clapton recorded a rock version of B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone” for the B.B. King Blues Summit 100 album dedicated to King in 2026 to acknowledge his 100th birthday posthumously.
