Chuck D

Chuck D’s newest solo album, Enemy Radio: Radio Armageddon, is out now via Def Jam. The Public Enemy co-founder shared the concept of the album in a press release. He says, “Radio Armageddon is not just an album; it’s a frequency. This project is a broadcast of resistance, revolution, and rhythm. I’m proud to have these warriors alongside me on the dial.” Daddy-O of Stetsasonic, Schoolly D, and Miranda Writes are some of the guests who join the rap legend on Radio Armageddon. Four decades later, as Public Enemy’s main voice, Chuck D is still angry, focused, and lyrically on fire. “Carry On” bites hard and finds Chuck D delivering hard truths about the society with a rhythmic cacophony produced by C-Doc and ID!. Things get reflective on “New Gens” with the unexpected appearance from Daddy-O of Stetsasonic as both legends show love to the next generation of rappers.

Radio Armageddon sounds like pirated radio for the radical, led by a rap pioneer who started his career woke and has been wide awake ever since. In 2023, he released We Wreck Stadium and last year he recorded his aunt’s poetry for The Writings Of Barbara Dumas Francis. Public Enemy’s What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down came out in 2020. Radio Armageddon has come at a time when Chuck D’s voice is needed in the midst of the United States’ current political situation that has people angrily divided over the presidency. Radio Armageddon isn’t so much about the world ending but just a certain part of it so things can start anew.
