Mikahl Anthony’s “La Flare” is the first single from his forthcoming debut album MUSE. In the mostly black-and-white video, a young woman walks around the city and shares her story. Anthony is a multi-hyphenate and he co-directed the video that looks more like a piece of a film-in-progress with William Archetype. “La Flare” sounds like something from the second wave of early 2000s neo-soul when Anthony pleads for a love interest’s astrology sign. When he flexes lyrically about crossing roads with his fated love a trap beat lengthened by a slower cadence replaces the earlier sound. It all works together to create a sensual sound profile and curiosity for MUSE.
Anthony released “Space Blue/Deep Ain’t It,” last month as an introduction to MUSE an acronym for Using Sensory Energy and Making Use Of Seclusion Every Day. The St. Louis, MO resident has previously collaborated with fellow Midwesterners, Mick Jenkins, Chance The Rapper, and Smino. According to a press release the upcoming album is creative self-therapy that uses Anthony’s romantic relationships as a place for self-reflection. He says,
‘I wanted to use a unique style of songwriting, arrangement, and filming with the intention of soundtracking my self-development/maturation process.”
