R.I.P. Michael Watford

House music singer Michael Watford died on January 26th at 80, according to a Facebook post by his son Solomon Watford. Watford’s voice was heard on numerous songs in the ’90s and 2000s. He broke through as a distinct voice with his 1993 single “So Into You.” Watford was born in Virginia and moved to New Jersey with his family as a child. He worked with the Smack music collective and recorded his first single, “Holdin On'” with Roger Sanchez and Eddie Perez in 1991. His voice was heard on songs with Masters At Work, Robert Owens, En Vogue, Barbara Tucker, Kerri Chandler, Todd Terry, and Jamie Lewis. In a sea of mostly nameless dance music artists Watford’s vocals were recognized and remembered by casual and hardcore fans. New York DJ and producer Lenny Fontana posted on Facebook in December 2023 that Watford was in hospice care but his illness was not revealed. A GoFundMe Campaign was started for him because he did not have life insurance.
