Gary Beals returns after three years with his third album, The Melody Within. The R&B vocalist conquers a lengthy tracklist with potent vocals that stand tall on the wellsprings of gospel and soul greats. “Good People, Good Vibes” is a catchy invitation to the musical revelry enhanced by producer Beatchild’s smooth interpolation of Eddie Kendrick’s “Intimate Friends” bass and chords. Myles “Losh” Schwartz provides another sound fit for Beals’ vocals on the philosophical “Life Will Be Different” by producing drums, bass, and guitar reminiscent of Hall & Oates’s ’80s days. Beatchild’s genius goes even further back in time on the ’60s-sounding “Self Revolution,” complete with a dusty piano, jangly blues guitar, and the sound of pre-digital studio soundboards. Beals’s approach to love is as strong as his self-love mantras; “How Do I Say (I Love You)” is an earthshaking ballad finessed with rumbling drums and sentimental strings. The Canadian singer shared his summary of The Melody Within in a press statement:
“This album serves as the aftermath to my previous album, Bleed My Truth. It’s a continuation of my musical journey, a fusion of soulful melodies and diverse influences that mirror both my personal and artistic evolution. Each song is a chapter, a piece of my heart and soul, inviting listeners into my world of emotions, experiences, and connection. It uncovers the melody that resides within. The anticipation is building as I look forward to sharing this collection of new music, and I hope it resonates deeply, offering a meaningful and memorable musical experience enriched with a multitude of emotions.”
Gary Beals’s The Melody Within is more assured than Bleed My Truth and reveals an even greater control of his extraordinary instrument.
