Tears For Fears’ “Mad World” was their first single to chart in 1982. Roland Orzabal wanted to make a song similar to Duran Duran’s New Wave hit “Girls On Film.” Their collaboration started with this idea but once they started to write the song the sound took a different direction. Lyrically they were impacted by the healing theories of The Primal Scream author Arthur Janov. The book influenced the entire album which had two more successful singles via “Change” and “Pale Shelter.” The Hurting was their 1983 debut and is credited as being a starting point for the Second British Invasion. The band would consistently have international success for the rest of the decade as was one of the most prominent pop bands of the ’80s. Michael Andrews and Gary Jules covered “Mad World” for the film Donnie Darko and Demi Lovato recorded a version for her seventh album. Tears For Fears released The Tipping Point in 2022 and in April 2023 announced the second half of the tour supporting the album.
