BANTU’s “Wayo and Division” is their latest response to Nigerian politics. The West African country just held elections in February that are currently being contested in court by candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi who came in second and third place. Famed Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wrote a letter to President Joe Biden urging him not to support the results. BANTU warns in their lyrics :
“All na smoke screen to cause hate and confusion
When dem share big money
And big big contract
Nothing like tribe, nothing like religion
Don’t let them scam you
With their wayo and division”
The band used Ghanaian satirical artist Bright Tetteh Ackwerth to create artwork for the single depicting struggle between the poor and the elites. BANTU’s album is coming out in June.
