Kilo Kish questions the American dream while wearing a flag in her video for “Death Fantasy” which has haunting backing vocals from Miguel. Her wobbly walk around a hotel ends up with her appearing to be literally sick of capitalism. Kish’s American Gurl album is based on the typical concept of mainstream success, how to approach that idea, and her feelings about Black artists being pigeonholed into the same R&B and hip-hop tropes. Sonically she’s wearing new wave and pop styles and more guest appearances from Vince Staples and Jesse Boykins III. The video for “Death Fantasy” comes at a time when the world is dealing with a recession. Kish’s flag and indigestion are raising pertinent questions about what it’s like being an American coping with hyperinflation.
