Frank Lee’s Taken EP Is Inspired By The Dancefloor

Frank Lee is a producer from Australia now based in Berlin. His Taken EP champions the dancefloor with a nod towards Detroit heroes like Moodymann and J. Dilla. The jazz-educated artist also counts Madlib among his muses  for his sweaty 6-song party. Lee says,

‘TAKEN’ is my most serious and detailed collection of music to date. I grew so much as a producer making this. A lot of it was made during Berlin’s first lockdown, in March 2020. I sat on it for a while before coming back to it at the end of the year and remixing it. I tried to make the kinda album that I wanted to hear: grooves that are interesting, songs that are real and hit hard, and also a few songs that don’t take themselves too seriously.”

The steamy 4/4 heat of the title track is a contrast to the lo fi beauty of “Shortcut.” Lee ends things with a tribute to Theo Parrish with “One 4 Theo.”
