Heather Headley covered Drew and Shannon’s “In My Mind” for her 2006 sophomore album of the same name. Headley’s blazing performance made the lyrics about still having affection for a past partner real and relatable to anyone who had ever experienced an eternal love. The Diane Martel-directed video translated Headley’s audio performance to visual without losing any of the emotion. “In My Mind” heightened Headley’s profile beyond anything she did prior in the realm of music. Her debut release This Is Who I Am was nominated for a Grammy but “In My Mind” was a number one single and album. The song was famously placed on an episode of The Game in 2008 and then sampled for “Seeing Green” from the reissue of Nicki Minaj’s Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape.Â
Headley’s last music release was the 2018 Broadway My Way. She is also a Tony Award-winning actress and has played a leading role on the Netflix series Sweet Magnolias since 2019. In 2021, she portrayed gospel singer Clara Ward in the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect.Â
