Throwback: Patti LaBelle: If Only You Knew

Patti LaBelle had a commercial breakthrough with her sixth album I’m In Love Again with the slow rise of the lead single “If Only You Knew.”  Dexter Wansel, Cynthia Biggs and Kenneth Gamble wrote and produced the song about someone unaware they have sparked the romantic interest of a secret admirer. LaBelle achieved of one three no. 1 R&B hit songs with “If Only You Knew” and this helped the album reach gold status. Creatively she sang one of the most expressive love pleas ever and added another signature song to her catalog. In the 38 years since its release “If Only You Knew” has been covered by Keke Wyatt, Phil Perry and Soul for Real and performed live by SWV, Ledisi and Tamia. In 2021, Patti LaBelle performed “Love, Need and Want You” also from I’m In Love Again for DJ Cassidy’s Pass The Mic Mother’s Day Edition.
