Syleena Johnson’s Chapter II: The Voice is her second studio album and some argue her best. She worked with R. Kelly and producer Joel Kipnis again with whom she had good chemistry previously on Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness. Kelly wrote and produced “Guess What” which tapped into the spirit of Betty Wright and put Johnson’s voice in the present with strong roots in soul music’s past. Her silky rasp had a natural wisdom beyond her years and made the narrative about an unfaithful partner sound like an old blues record and something contemporary at the same time. Fab Five Freddy directed the video that found Johnson being a decisive woman who dismisses a dishonest boyfriend to find true love by the end of the clip. In reality, Kelly was inspired by Johnson’s conversation with him about her ex-husband and her experience added another layer of emotion. “Guess What” was the second single from Chapter II album and Johnson’s first number one making the top position on the Adult R&B songs chart. The singer will release her eighth studio album Woman in 2020 and is currently a frequent guest on Claudia Jordan’s Fox Soul streaming show Cocktails With Queens.Â
