Whitney Houston covered Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” for the 1992 soundtrack for The Bodyguard. Narada Michael Walden, Robert Civillés and David Cole produced the song that was released as the second single from the collection. Houston’s version was buoyant and had a strong presence on the charts and in the clubs just like Khan’s did years before. Randee St. Nicholas directed the video that was a celebration of Black women dancing mixed with clips from the movie. Houston was visibly pregnant in the clip that had guest appearances from Valerie Simpson who co-wrote the song with her partner Nicholas Ashford, Cissy Houston, Chaka Khan, TLC and Martha Wash. Houston would later perform the song with Chaka Khan For VH1’s Diva’s Live ’99 and a 1994 performance of the song was included in the 2014 release, Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances. It was announced in April 2020 that a Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody was being developed with Clive Davis, screenwriter Anthony McCarten and director Stella Meghie.
