KRS-One went solo in 1993 after releasing five albums with his Boogie Down Productions collective. I Got Next was his third release as KRS-One and it was a peak form moment for him. “A Friend” stood out for its tribute to one of the most important human connections. Producer Showbiz made a sound bed of strings and snares that swirled around KRS-One’s words. The video captured New York’s ’90s hip-hop world and there were appearances from Angie Martinez, Redman, Doug E. Fresh and Kool Herc. I Got Next went gold and was KRS-One’s last album of the ’90s. In 2019, KRS-One released his 15th full-length Street Light.Â
