Throwback: Xscape-Who Can I Run To

Xscape covered “Who Can I Run To” for their 1995 sophomore album Off The Hook. The Jones Girls were the first to record the song in 1979 for their first full-length outing. Jermaine Dupri produced Xscape’s version and together they made it the song a classic all over again but for the ’90s. Tamika Scott was brilliant as the lead singer and Kandi Burruss’s voice was the anchor for the group’s standout harmonies. There was an aura of nostalgia around their performance but their lustrous vocals allowed them to own the song while still paying tribute to the original. “Who Can I Run To” helped Off The Hook avoid the sophomore slump to go platinum and reiterate their status as one of the premier vocal groups of the time. Xscape went on a hiatus in 2005 after heir fourth album was shelved by the record company. The group reunited in 2017 for live shows at the BET Awards, the Essence Music Festival and Detroit’s Chene Park. In 2018 their XSCAP 3 EP had a digital release.  [youtube id=”xLjyPBQk_Os”]
