Detroit DJ, producer and educator Mike Huckaby died yesterday at age 54 after stroke complications and COVID-19. Huckaby was an ambassador of Detroit’s techno and house scene for the last three decades. A party secured by designer Maurice Malone in 1988 started Huckaby’s quest as a local and global DJ. In the ’90s he was the buyer for the influential Record Time dance music room. This is the time he started recording deep house for a variety of independent labels. In 2002, he was on the advisory board of the DEMF which became the yearly Movement Festival in the city. When he wasn’t traveling to take the music to the world he taught students how to use software programs like Ableton and Native Instruments for Red Bull Music Academy and YouthVille Detroit.Â
