Angela Davis talks to Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! about Aretha Franklin’s offer to post her bail in 1970 after she was arrested for murder, kidnapping and conspiracy because of her link to the Marin County courthouse incident. Davis was shunned by most Americans because of her Communist views but Franklin openly supported her campaign to be freed. Davis talks about this time and what Franklin means to her history. She also speaks on Franklin’s contribution to feminism and how her singing inspired people to want a better America.Â
Goodman later speaks with Duke professor and author Mark Anthony Neal about Franklin’s career.Â
