[youtube id=”97sB1Xjvkok”] Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story is a six-part docu-series about Trayvon Martin who was killed by neighborhood watch coordinator George Zimmerman six years ago. Jay-Z produced the show that looks at Martin’s life, the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and the aftermath of his death. Zimmerman followed Martin around a gated community and spoke with emergency responders who told him to let them come and assess the situation. He fatally shot Martin and defended the shooting by stating that he had to defend his life with the weapon despite Martin only having candy and iced in his possession.
Zimmerman eluded an initial arrest because law enforcement said he had a right to shoot because of the Stand Your Ground statue. He was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter in 2013. The case sparked several protests around the country and Martin’s hoodie became a symbol of racist injustice. There are interviews with Angela Davis, Al Sharpton, Carmelo Anthony and others. Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story premieres on the Paramount network on July 30th at 10 PMÂ ET.Â
