The proud New Jersey native and hip-hop icon also gave the commencement speech to the graduating class. She credited the life lessons she learned in her hometown for inspiring her achievements. Dr. Owens will celebrate 30 years in the entertainment business with her first performance at the Essence Music Festival this year.Â
