[youtube id=”IKA8H_LolNM”] The official trailer for Netflix’s Roxanne Roxanne has scenes guaranteed to make the average 2018 hip-hop fan curious. Roxanne Shanté’s rise at age 14 as the only female member of The Juice is another hip-hop story that was long overdue for a movie treatment. Her “Roxanne’s Revenge” inspired the most response songs in the genre and became known as the Roxanne Wars. Roxanne Shanté’s voice was everywhere in 1984 and it along with her doorknocker earrings have become icons of ’80s hip-hop.
Actress Chanté Adams won a Sundance Special Jury Prize Breakthrough Award for her portrayal of Roxanne Shante’ and it is her first acting job. Nia Long portrays her mother and Mahershala Ali is her boyfriend of the time and their appearances in the trailer add to the movie’s appeal. Rza composed music for the film and Pharrell and Forest Whitaker are co-producers. Roxanne Roxanne will stream on Netflix March 23rd.
