The National Symphony Orchestra provided the music for the show that has been turned into a documentary. The backstage footage, Nas’ narration, old videos and the concert scenes are woven together to make the documentary. Illmatic made several hip-hop fans declare Nas to be the second iteration of Rakim but it was quickly discovered that his voice belonged only to him. Illmatic was a watershed moment in hip-hop’s Golden Era and was one of the albums to secure New York’s dominance in the genre. The documentary will air on PBS February 2nd at 9 PM ET.
