[youtube id=”7uPn9HrQSgA”] Slyvia Striplin, Marva Hicks, Susan Beaubian, Vivian Prince and Denie Corbett were The Eighties Ladies. Roy Ayers and Edwin Birdsong produced their album Ladies Of The Eighties which was recorded with Ayers’ band. The group was an all-woman version of Ayers’ style much like Prince and Vanity 6 and Rick James’s Mary Jane Girls. None of the songs were charted hits but the album became a collector’s item and very popular among DJs. “Turned On To You” is considered a classic on London’s rare groove scene and a throwback for R&B fans who remember it. Marva Hicks had success as a backup vocalist and Striplin’s “Give Me Your Love” and “You Can’t Turn Me Away” were also recognized by rare groove fans and sampled by hip-hop producers. Erykah Badu covered “You Can’t Turn Me Away” on her New Amerykah Part Two album.
