Christopher “Fresh Kid Ice” Wong Won a founding member of the 2 Live Crew died today at age 53. Won started the group in California in 1985 with DJ Mister Mixx and Amazing Vee before they relocated to Florida without Vee. Luther Campbell signed them to his Luke Skyywalker record label and became the lead vocalist. They reached a new level of controversy in rap when their 1989 album As Nasty As They Wanna Be was ruled obscene and illegal to sell. The 2 Live Crew was arrested after performing the album live and a retail worker was also arrested for selling the album to an undercover police officer. The obscenity conviction was overruled in 1992 and they all were acquitted and the Supreme Court refused to hear the appeal from Florida’s Broward County. They became pioneers of defending the First Amendment and pushing the envelope of sexually-oriented lyrics in rap.  Fresh Kid Ice released four solo albums and discovered Flo Rida who appeared on his Freaky Chinese release and was his hypeman on tour. Earlier this year he released the mixtape Breaking Glass Ceilings Vol. 1 to showcase new artists. The 2 Live Crew story is being developed by Lions Gate using Luther Campbell’s memoirs.
