Stax Records is reissuing Melvin Van Pebbles’ Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song soundtrack on May 26th. Earth, Wind & Fire performed the music for the soundtrack that marketed the film to audiences that were hesitant to see the X-rated movie. For the first time, the album will be available digitally and the vinyl has been remastered from the original analog tapes. New liner notes from music critic Jeff Weiss and Pebble’s son Mario who directed New Jack City are included with the reissue.
Pebble’s film was self-released and became required watching by The Black Panthers because it captured a lot of the frustration felt by Black communities. Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song grossed $10 million making it the most successful independent film at the time. The movie was a game-changer that opened the doors for the Blaxploitation era and films like Shaft and Super Fly.
The reissue is part of Stax Records’ 60th-anniversary celebration and can be pre-ordered now.
