Gooding was a native of the Bronx and joined the group in 1971 after the passing of the original lead singer Don McPherson. They had success with “Everybody Plays The Fool” and “Just Don’t Want To Be Lonely.” By 1977 Gooding had left the group to have a solo career on Motown Records. He would reunite with The Main Ingredient at two different times and he re-recorded “Happiness Is Just Around The Bend” in the ’80’s. Gooding, 72, was also the father of actors Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omar and Gooding.
