Today Afropunk announced their Carnival of Consciousness taking place in Atlanta October 14-16 at 787 Windsor. The event is described as “a festival of contemporary black expression and youthful black consciousness.” Â The Fancy Dress Ball will start the festival with a Jou’vert style celebration for the Afropunk Global Initiative. J’ouvert overnight street carnivals started 200 years ago in the Caribbean as a way to celebrate the emancipation of the slaves in 1838. The Afropunk Global Initiative will present a series of lectures and panels called Social Salons lead by a variety of innovators including cultural critic Michaela Angela Davis. Tyler The Creator, Sza, Saul Williams and Lion Babe are among the lineup. Tickets are on sale at the Afropunk site.
