Carey considered Butterfly an important moment in her growth as an artist because she had the most creative freedom ever. Kamal Fareed, Puff Daddy and Missy Elliott helped Carey move more into an urban direction in her music. “The Beautiful Ones” was the only cover song among hits like “Honey” and “My All.” Carey’s version of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” was well received but when he died she chose to sing her own song, “One Sweet Day” to honor him because he did not like when others recorded his music. Prince was also a personal friend to Mariah Carey and he advised her on the decision to become an American Idol judge. Butterfly is considered one of Carey’s best albums and the creative turning point in her career.
