The song begins with a sample of a newscast announcing Gaye’s death on April 1, 1984, after being fatally shot by his father. Gaye’s falsetto is sampled in the background of nighttime keys and a ritualistic house beat to rival any drug. Moodymann’s acknowledgement of Gaye’s genius is not mournful but is instead a solid, celebratory dance.”The Day We Lost The Soul” is one of Moodymann’s several deep house essentials to come out on his KDJ Records in the ’90’s.
