Fatman’s “Release Me” from 1990 featuring Stella Mae was part of the UK’s house music explosion that started in ’86 with Farley Jackmaster Funk’s “Love Can’t Turn Around” and Pete Tong’s The House Sound Of Chicago, Vol 1. “Release Me” came out on the influential FFRR electronic music label founded by Tong in ’86. Fatman’s vocals were in line with traditional R&B singing and Stella Mae’s buoyant rap about the unity of the human race made the song a solid entry into the hip-house genre as well. “Release Me” hit number 86 on the UK charts and remains one of the more obscure but prime house music songs from the genre’s earlier days abroad.
